# Being mentioned is not being a source

> AI mentions many brands, but builds its answer on those who have recorded something themselves.

Many brands think visibility in AI is a matter of being mentioned often enough. The more often the name comes up, the better. That is not true. AI systems do mention brands, but they build their answers on those who have recorded something themselves. Being mentioned is awareness. Being cited is proof.

## What the figures show

In October 2026 two studies appeared that show the same pattern. Ahrefs tracked which websites ChatGPT cites as a source. In March, Reddit still appeared in roughly one in five American answers; by the end of September it was one in 43. Wikipedia fell from one in seven to one in 35. PubMed, a database of original medical research, rose from 64th place to 4th.

A day later Semrush published its index. Fewer than half of the hundred brands AI mentions most often are also among the hundred domains most often used as a source. Ford is the eighteenth most-mentioned brand in ChatGPT, but ranks 1,055th as a source.

These are snapshots, from companies that sell measurement tools themselves. Even so, the direction is clear.

## The echo loses out to the original

What repeats loses ground. What has been researched, tested or recorded first-hand wins. A forum that collects opinions gives way to the place where the original work lives. A summary gives way to the source.

Ahrefs noticed something else. When ChatGPT searches within a single website, in three out of four cases among the most-searched domains it is a brand's own site. AI goes to the original when it can. The question is what it finds there.

## Awareness is not a foundation

Ford is well known. Everyone knows the name, so AI mentions it. But anyone who wants to know what the brand itself says apparently finds little to build on. Awareness is what others say about a brand. Being a source is what a brand has recorded itself.

That awareness exists in the Netherlands too. This month, in its study among Dutch marketers, Kantar concluded that brands must be recognisable to AI systems, and that sharp positioning is becoming more important as a result. Not louder. Sharper.

- **Without a foundation** The brand is mentioned.; Others say what it is.; Every new text repeats what is already elsewhere.
- **With a foundation** The brand is cited.; The brand says what it is.; Every new text builds on what is established.

## What makes a brand a source

A source has something that is nowhere else. Its own choices. Its own work. Its own words for what the brand does and why. Not text written to be found, but text that records something.

That is not a new discipline. It is a brand foundation, with a new reader. Those who already knew what the brand is now write it down in their own place. Those who never decided it find that AI does not know either.

> A brand that has recorded itself does not need to be repeated. It is cited. What always applies here

## How we make a brand a source

We do not start with visibility in AI, but with what only this brand can say. In Brand Foundation™ we establish the core: what the brand stands for, what it proves, in which words. With Brand Platform™ the brand's own site becomes the place where that lives, clearly and coherently. Then nobody needs to repeat the brand. There is one place where the answer is.

Those who record it themselves are the ones cited
