Those who are always on mostly accelerate noise. Direction emerges in the space in between.

Speed feels like progress. More posts, more channels, faster responses. But those who are always on no longer see what is happening. Slowing down is not standing still. It is where direction emerges.

Always on is not a direction

Organisations speed up because standing still feels like falling behind. Every notification asks for a response, every channel for a plan, every trend for a position. What disappears along the way is the moment to choose. Without that moment, speed becomes a reflex. A lot happens, but little is decided.

The space between things

In Japan that space is called Ma: the pause between two notes, the emptiness that lets a form speak. Without Ma, music becomes noise and a page becomes a list. We design with it. A brand that rings true needs space to confirm rather than repeat.

What research shows

Psychologists at the University of California, Santa Barbara (Baird et al., 2012) gave people a creative task and then a break. Those who did something simple during that break, letting their thoughts wander freely, came up with more solutions afterwards than those who kept concentrating or took no break at all. Not thinking harder, but letting go. Ideas come when the mind briefly has nothing to do.

A pause is not a gap in the work. It is where the work finds its direction.

What always applies here
  • Without a pausea brand reacts to everything that passes by.
  • With a pausea brand chooses what it wants to confirm.

A page where you do not have to do anything

Niksen™ did not come out of a brainstorm. It comes from personal experience: with stress, with always being on and with learning to slow down. What helped there was not a new app, but space. That is why merkbaar.nl has a page where you do not have to do anything. Choose silence or focus, put your phone down and the point holds the time. Move, and the ring breaks. No clock, no notifications, no score. A moment of Niksen™

How we slow down in our work

We do not start by making. First the core, then the form. Every project has a deliberate moment in which nothing happens: between conversation and design, between sketch and choice. That sometimes feels like lost time. Yet that is exactly where the decisions are made that never need explaining later.

Speed follows direction

A brand that knows what it confirms can be fast afterwards. Not because it runs harder, but because it no longer has to hesitate at every step. Slowing down at the start saves accelerating without direction at the end.

Those who do nothing for a moment see again what matters
