World 01 · The dot

Welcome to the Brand Tour. Everything starts with a dot.

A flight from the first marks on a cave wall to a brand that needs no explanation. Everything you see is built from dots, like all printed matter. Except our dot. That one is solid.

40,800 yearsAt least that old is a red disc on the wall of El Castillo in Spain. One of the oldest marks we know.
World 02 · The cave

I was here. The first brand was a hand on a wall.

The Cueva de las Manos in Argentina holds hundreds of hands, some 9,000 years old. A hand flat on the rock, pigment blown around it. What remained was a negative. Almost all of them left hands.

World 03 · The brand mark

Brand means burn. A brand was once a burn mark.

Brand comes from the Old Norse brandr: fire. Herders burned a sign into their cattle, potters pressed their mark into clay. What remains is one sign. A mark that says: this is ours.

World 04 · The printing press

Mainz, around 1450. A screw, a plate and loose letters.

Gutenberg cast letters in lead, each one mirrored, and set them in a bed. A wooden press pressed the paper onto the ink with a single turn. Some 180 copies of his Bible were printed, every letter the same each time. Recognition through repetition.

World 05 · The Bauhaus

Weimar, 1919. Form back to the core.

Triangle, square, circle. The Bauhaus brought art and craft together, without ornament for the sake of ornament. A chair, a lamp or a letter had to fit what it was for. In 1933 the school closed. The thinking stayed.

World 06 · The identity

One sign, everywhere. That is how a brand became a system.

In 1907 Peter Behrens designed everything for AEG: the logo, lamps, catalogues and the factory. Often seen as the first complete corporate identity. Coherence only works when everyone uses the same sign the same way.

World 07 · The noise

Everyone says everything. So no one hears anything anymore.

Every company has a logo, a website and a feed, and AI adds a thousand more in seconds. What becomes visible without coherence disappears just as fast. Fly through it. On the other side it is quiet.

World 08 · Beyond Explanation™

A brand that rings true needs no explanation. People recognise it, trust it and remember it.

Space is not emptiness, but calm that gives meaning. Explanation works as long as everything stays the same. Confirmation works when everything changes.

World 09 · Brand Architecture™

The core first. Then the rest.

Four stops on one line: Brand Foundation™, Brand Design™, Brand Activation™ and Brand Platform™. From choice to sign, to the outside world, to every day.

Final stop

Thank you for travelling with us. Back at the dot.

Merkbaar™ is a branding studio in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, since 2005. We make beautiful things, until they look beautiful and ring true.
